In an effort to alleviate the housing crisis in Bath, a planning application submitted to the council has revealed potential conversion of a student lettings office into housing. The proposed transformation would see the vacant estate agents on Newbridge Road redeveloped into a two-storey, two-bedroom, two-bathroom flat, contributing a small but meaningful step in addressing the city’s housing challenges.
The envisioned floor plan includes a loft, drive, and an en-suite, situated in the city’s genteel Weston suburb. Boasting proximity to a post office and the vibrant Chelsea Road, which hosts various bakeries, cafes, and boutiques, the location offers a desirable lifestyle. While details about the availability and cost of the flat remain unclear, properties in BA1 are known to be in high demand, often selling quickly compared to the Somerset average.
This initiative aligns with Bath and North East Somerset Council’s recent commitment to repurpose as many existing buildings as possible for residential use. Highlighting the severity of the housing crisis, Liberal Democrat Councillor Matt McCabe emphasized the pressing need for additional housing units. He stressed the authority’s responsibility to harness its assets and collaborate with the development company Aequus to generate hundreds of council properties annually, aiming for a total of 1,000 by 2033.
