Forest-inspired Nursery to Open Near Somerset Cricket Club in Early 2027

A new forest nursery is set to open near Stogumber Cricket Club in Somerset, welcoming local children from early 2027. The project, led by sisters Rebecca and Victoria Moore of Lille and Wild, aims to offer nature-centered early education in a log cabin-style facility on the eastern edge of Stogumber village.

Located adjacent to the cricket pitch, the 30-square-meter structure will include an all-weather veranda, providing a versatile space for children aged three months to five years. The nursery will accommodate up to 20 children during term time and holiday clubs, supported by a team of four staff members.

The approved site serves families from nearby villages nestled between the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the eastern border of Exmoor National Park — including Bicknoller, Crowcombe, Lydeard St Lawrence, and Monksilver. Planning officers from Somerset Council approved the development without requiring full committee review, emphasizing that the design respects the rural environment and does not negatively affect the cricket club’s facilities.

Planning officer Denise Todd praised the project’s fit with its surroundings, stating, “The design, materials, and size for the proposed forest kindergarten reflect the rural location and maintain the integrity of the cricket club setting.”

Representatives from Polden Planning, the Moores' planning advisors, highlighted the strong community support and efficient collaboration with council officials, including local division member Cara Strom. Work is expected to begin soon, with the nursery aimed to open shortly after Christmas 2026.

The Moores are currently recruiting a childminder passionate about outdoor learning to join their team. Candidates will support the care and development of children from birth to five years, working 21 to 32 hours per week, Monday through Thursday. Those interested are encouraged to apply by contacting [email protected].

Lille and Wild’s ethos focuses on child-led learning through play and connection with nature, encouraging children to explore and discover at their own pace in a safe, nurturing environment both indoors and outdoors.
