‘Folklore Material’ - Bath Rugby Legend Roger Spurrell Passes Away

Bath Rugby mourns the loss of Roger Spurrell, the revered former club captain who passed away on May 30, 2026, at the age of 71. Born on May 19, 1955, Spurrell made a significant mark on the club and the South West rugby scene during an influential career.

Spurrell debuted for Bath Rugby on September 18, 1979, facing the California Seahawks. Over seven pivotal years, he played 206 matches, helping transform Bath into a dominant force in English rugby. His tenure culminated with his final appearance in October 1986 against South Wales Police.

In addition to his time at Bath, Spurrell represented numerous South West teams, including Launceston RFC, Plymouth Albion, Devon & Cornwall, Army RFC, Combined Services, Somerset, and South West England. However, his greatest impact remains with Bath Rugby.

Taking on the club captaincy from the 1981–82 season for four consecutive years, Spurrell led Bath to their first major silverware victories. Under his leadership, Bath clinched the John Player Cup twice—defeating Bristol in 1984 and London Welsh in 1985. These triumphs laid the foundation for Bath’s celebrated golden era of domestic dominance.

Jack Rowell, former Bath coach and rugby legend, reflected on Spurrell’s influence in a 2015 interview: “Roger Spurrell was folklore material. Despite initial doubts about his captaincy, he was absolutely key to Bath’s rise. Roger was incredibly tough, seemingly impervious to pain, and was an underrated openside flanker. The leadership he brought was invaluable.”

In recognition of his immense contributions, Spurrell was among the inaugural inductees into the Bath Rugby Hall of Fame in 2015, alongside Jack Rowell OBE and Jeremy Guscott.

Beyond rugby, Spurrell served as a paratrooper and shepherd before becoming a successful businessman. He owned The Island Club, a popular late-night venue in Bath, and operated restaurants in the Cornish coastal towns of Polzeath and Newquay.

Bath Rugby has expressed its deepest gratitude for Spurrell’s commitment and the enduring influence of his values on the club’s culture. Condolences have been extended to his family and loved ones.

Roger Spurrell (May 19, 1955 – May 30, 2026) will be remembered as a true pioneer of Bath Rugby’s golden age, a tough leader, and a beloved figure in South West rugby.
