The legendary Flying Scotsman steam train is set to operate on the West Somerset Railway this summer, thrilling rail enthusiasts and history buffs alike. The historic locomotive will run services between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead on selected dates throughout June and July.
Several journeys have already sold out due to high demand, but a limited number of seats remain available for select dates. The Flying Scotsman will be in action on June 29 and 30 as well as July 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12.
In addition to regular trips, there will be a special pre-bookable Tea and Visit event at Bishops Lydeard while the engine is not running on June 26 and 27. Evening journeys also offer passengers a chance to indulge in a three-course meal aboard the train, enhancing the nostalgic experience.

Built in Doncaster by the London and North Eastern Railway and designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, the Flying Scotsman belongs to the powerful A1 class. It became famous for completing the first non-stop London to Edinburgh trip in 1928, covering the distance in eight hours. In 1934, it was the first UK locomotive to reach 100 mph during a test run.
After retiring from regular service in 1963, the Flying Scotsman was lovingly restored in a £4.2 million project completed in 2015, ensuring it remains operational for future generations.
On the days when the Flying Scotsman runs, trains will not call at any stations between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead. To manage crowds and ensure safety, all 10 stations on this stretch will be closed to non-ticket holders.
Normal timetables will resume on Thursday, July 3, and on July 5 and 6.
Tickets can be booked via the West Somerset Railway website or by calling their dedicated line at 01643 870103, available weekdays from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.
