Florence Welch’s Haunted Somerset Estate

Florence Welch, the lead vocalist of indie rock band Florence and The Machine, has reportedly purchased a £1.9million property in Somerset. However, she’s been waiting to move in for the past four years due to extensive renovations.

The singer first acquired the Grade II listed residence in 2021 and submitted final plans last year to partially demolish some structures as part of the refurbishment, as the MailOnline reports.

The plans reveal that Welch, 38, aims to merge the four separate buildings on the land that have been utilised as individual homes since the 1940s, after she managed to buy the final building on the estate in 2023.

Records indicate that no neighbours have raised objections to the plans, but they could potentially disturb a former resident of the property - a ghost, to be precise.

Local folklore suggests that the apparition of a grey lady has been sighted on the historic property. This chilling female figure was reportedly seen there in the 1970s, according to a book detailing the local legends of the area.

It remains unclear whether Welch is aware of the ‘grey lady’ who may inhabit her new home, but the musician is known to have a spiritual inclination. But the possibility of a supernatural presence on her new estate might just be an added perk for the spiritually inclined singer.

“I spent a lot of time in front of books and old historic buildings convinced that ghosts were real, vampires existed, and having a really heightened sense of those type of things happening around me,” Welch confessed to Vice in 2015.

She even initiated a witch coven during her school days. “Me and my two friends made these spell books where we’d try to do spells on our classmates,” she revealed to the publication.

The estate, with roots tracing back to the 12th century, is nestled on 1.2 acres of land, complete with outbuildings and landscaped gardens in a tranquil Somerset village. The property boasts sixty rooms spread across three floors, along with a scullery, a grand hall, a swimming pool, and a folly.

Since initiating the purchase of the property, the indie singer has lodged six planning applications for her new home, all of which are either approved or awaiting approval. When approached by the MailOnline, Welch’s representatives chose not to comment.
