Closure of the main road from Chard Reservoir to the town center is scheduled for a ten-week period during spring and summer. The flood prevention work aims to reinforce the reservoir’s barrier and safeguard its dam against potential flooding risks. The project, initiated by the Somerset Rivers Authority and South Somerset District Council, will include the construction of a ‘wave wall’ to mitigate water over-topping and enhance the dam’s resilience to extreme flood events. In addition, reconstruction of nearby culverts and re-grading work at the Anglers car park will be undertaken to further fortify the area.
The environmental impact of the project is being addressed by repurposing wood from removed trees to create a hibernaculum and replace play equipment within the reservoir’s play-zone. Pedestrian access to the reservoir will be maintained throughout the closure, while alternative arrangements for accessing the Anglers car park have been provided. This essential work is crucial in fortifying the reservoir’s defenses and protecting local communities from the potential consequences of a dam failure.
Councillor Graham Oakes, portfolio holder for public health, environment, and climate change, emphasized the necessity of the work to bolster the reservoir’s resilience and safeguard the community. The Chairman of the SRA, Mike Stanton, highlighted the significant impact of the project in reducing flood risks for a wide area from Chard down to Muchelney, underlining its importance in mitigating the impact of flooding on nearly 1,000 properties.
