Residents at Dewdown House in Weston-super-Mare traded their slippers for castanets during a recent flamenco dancing workshop, part of a new wellbeing initiative at the Salvation Army-run care home. The initiative, a collaboration with local group That Creative Thingy Wotsit, aims to bring joy, creativity, and human connection to care settings. The workshop was a resounding success, with residents clapping, swaying, and even rising to their feet in a sensory celebration of Spanish rhythm. The event served as a heartwarming reminder that age is no barrier to joy or new experiences.
Clare, the leader for Salvation Army Older People’s Services at Dewdown House, expressed enthusiasm about the transformative collaboration. She emphasized the profound impact of the sessions in fostering moments of genuine significance for the residents and staff. The creative programme will continue with an upcoming arts and crafts workshop followed by a retro-themed 60’s disco, promising more opportunities for joy and connection.
In addition to the arts initiative, Dewdown House is embracing Namaste Care, an internationally recognized program supporting people with advanced illnesses, especially those with dementia. This approach prioritizes loving touch, a serene environment, and meaningful interactions that focus on dignity and comfort. Clare spoke warmly of the program’s ability to deepen connections with the residents and to reinforce their sense of worth and love on a daily basis.
