Trevor Nex, a 43-year-old man from Baytree Farm, Watchfield, Highbridge, has been handed a five-year driving ban for driving his 4x4 under the influence of alcohol. Nex admitted to having “a couple of ports” before taking the wheel, breaching previous driving disqualifications and driving without insurance.
The incident occurred on November 29 in Hellings Cross, Bathelton, West Somerset, when Avon and Somerset Police stopped a vehicle suspected to be driven by someone under the influence. Upon arrival, officers found Nex exiting the driver’s seat and attempting to walk away. He initially denied ownership of the vehicle.
Police noticed an open bottle of alcohol inside the car and detected the smell of alcohol on Nex. He was detained and subsequently admitted to having no valid driving licence due to a previous ban.

At Taunton Magistrates' Court on January 28, Nex pleaded guilty to driving over the alcohol limit, driving while disqualified, and using a vehicle without third-party insurance. He was sentenced to 63 months’ disqualification, ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work, undertake a rehabilitation activity, and pay £199 in combined fines and costs.
Inspector Matt Boiles from the roads policing team condemned Nex’s actions, emphasizing the dangers of drink-driving regardless of location and the commitment of local authorities to remove dangerous drivers from the roads. He urged the public to report anyone driving under the influence to prevent serious injury or loss of life.
