Candidates have now been confirmed for the upcoming byelection in North Somerset, necessitated by the recent passing of Terry Porter, a long-standing and highly regarded councillor.
Mr Porter had served as the Conservative councillor for the Hutton and Locking ward since 2009, earning a reputation as one of the council’s most dedicated and active members. He died peacefully at his home on Friday 26 June, prompting heartfelt tributes from councillors across the political spectrum.
The byelection to fill his seat is scheduled for Thursday 10 September. Residents of Hutton and Locking who wish to vote must register by Monday 24 August to participate in the election.

Five political parties will be represented in the contest for the seat. Hutton and Locking is represented by two councillors, with Independent Mike Solomon currently serving as the other representative for the ward.
Michael Pryke, leader of the council’s opposition Conservative group and councillor for Clevedon Walton, expressed his sadness upon Mr Porter’s passing. He said, “I will personally miss his advice and thoughtful contributions, always shared with his usual good humour and charm.”
Mr Pryke continued, “Terry dedicated his life to public service and the communities he loved. Beginning as a councillor on Hutton Parish Council, he was elected to North Somerset Council in 2009 and served the residents of Hutton and Locking with unwavering commitment for more than 17 years.”
“During his time on the council, Terry held several key positions, including chair of Council. He was widely respected across all political groups for being a thoughtful, diligent, and principled councillor.”
Steve Bridger, the Independent councillor for Yatton, shared his reflections on Facebook: “It’s all too easy to be cynical about politics and those who serve, but Terry exemplified what it means to be a conscientious, passionate, and genuinely kind public servant. The council is poorer for his passing.”
Council leader Mike Bell, representing Weston-super-Mare Central for the Liberal Democrats, described Mr Porter as a “strong community champion.” Meanwhile, Deputy Council Leader Catherine Gibbons from Weston-super-Mare Milton, who leads the Labour group, affirmed that he was “kind, thoughtful and approachable.”
In his role, Mr Porter served as vice-chair of the council’s planning committee and participated in two scrutiny panels. At the April full council meeting, he delivered a passionate plea in support of converting the Tropicana site into a significant music venue, emphasising, “I think this is the last chance for the Tropicana.”
Beyond council duties, Mr Porter was active in the local community, notably with the Hutton Horticultural Society and in organising the annual Hutton Show, reflecting his broad commitment to the area he served.
