Exciting plans have been submitted to create a new communal sauna on Southbourne Promenade, operated by Dorset-based company The Saltwater Sauna in partnership with SOBO Beach. This wood-fired sauna and wellness space aims to become a vibrant community hub for relaxation and connection.
The proposed development features a handcrafted Finnish-style sauna accommodating up to 25 guests, complete with reception, changing rooms, an upper deck seating area, and beach showers. Additionally, the project includes a major upgrade to the public toilets currently owned by the council, enhancing facilities for the entire beach community.
Sam Glyn-Jones, co-founder of The Saltwater Sauna, shares the vision behind the project: “We’re thrilled to be expanding with a larger sauna and a more communal setup at Southbourne. Since day one, my wife and I have wanted to bring authentic sauna culture to the UK, rooted in the spirit of community. We’ve traveled extensively to Finland, where sauna culture is a cherished tradition — it’s like the local pub, but healthier. We look forward to creating that welcoming space here where people can relax and connect.”

Rich Slater, SOBO Beach Operations Manager, highlighted the community benefits of the upgrade: “One of the most common complaints we hear at SOBO Beach is about the condition of the toilets. We’re planning to take over their management from the council to deliver significant improvements. Working with The Saltwater Sauna team, who bring Nordic sauna expertise, will also help us expand our Wellness series of community events, kicking off with Wellness by the Sea on Friday, 20th June.”
The Saltwater Sauna already operates popular locations at Sandbanks, Avon Beach, and Lulworth Cove, offering traditional sauna rituals, cold-water immersion, and collaborations with local businesses. The new SOBO Beach facility is planned to operate year-round, welcoming both seasoned sauna enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
Arlene Glyn-Jones, co-founder of The Saltwater Sauna, emphasizes inclusivity: “Whether you’re deeply familiar with sauna traditions or interested in trying sauna and contrast therapy for the first time, we want this to be a space where everyone feels welcome and cared for. We’re incredibly excited to bring this unique aspect of sauna culture to the Southbourne community.”
Temporary permission for the project is being sought until October 2027, aligning with SOBO Beach’s current operational timeline.
