Firefighters Reveal What Burned in Bristol Hospital Solar Panel Fire

A significant fire erupted on the roof of St Michael’s Hospital in Bristol on Thursday, May 22, forcing the evacuation of patients, staff, and essential medical equipment. The blaze involved solar panels installed on the hospital’s roof, sending thick black smoke and visible flames across the city.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly, deploying crews from multiple stations including Temple, Yate, and Southmead. The fire was reported at 4:23 pm, and firefighters immediately began battling the rooftop inferno. Five fire engines and a turntable ladder remained on-site to monitor the situation.

Authorities confirmed that the hospital was partially evacuated during the incident. Critical areas such as the delivery suite were temporarily closed, with patients and vital equipment relocated for safety. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported.

Professor Stuart Walker, Managing Director of University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, expressed gratitude toward the hospital staff and fire service for their effective response. He encouraged patients with upcoming appointments to attend as scheduled, confirming that all services have resumed normal operation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
