A major fire broke out late Saturday night at the Amchara Health and Wellbeing Retreat, located at the historic Bindon Country House near Langford Budville, Somerset. Guests and staff were evacuated safely shortly before midnight on July 12, as flames engulfed the first floor of this Grade II listed 17th-century manor.
Firefighters from Devon and Somerset responded swiftly, dispatching multiple engines and an aerial ladder to tackle the blaze. As the fire intensified, reinforcements brought the total to eight fire pumps, several hose reels, breathing apparatus, and specialized equipment to prevent the fire from spreading further across the expansive property, which includes gardens, woodland, a pool, tennis courts, and a spa.
Despite their swift efforts, part of the three-storey annex suffered a partial collapse due to fire damage. By 8:55 a.m. on Sunday, the fire was declared under control, but the building incurred approximately 25% fire damage and 20% smoke damage. The fire had penetrated the roof space, causing concern about potential flames spreading throughout the structure’s upper levels.

Thanks to the early evacuation, no injuries were reported among guests or staff. Co-owner Justin Williams expressed profound gratitude for the firefighters’ dedication in preserving the historic retreat. “We’re just relieved everybody is safe and want to thank the firefighters for a job well done,” he said. Williams also acknowledged the emotional and business impact of the fire, noting that one bedroom was completely destroyed while several others suffered varying degrees of fire and smoke damage.
The full extent of damage to rooms and critical infrastructure like electrical and water systems will require further assessment before recovery plans can proceed. Meanwhile, Williams extended heartfelt thanks to both emergency services and retreat staff for their efforts during this challenging event.
