Fire Destroys Chicken Coops, Sheds and Fences in Rural Somerset

In the early hours of Sunday morning, 30 August, firefighters were called to tackle a significant blaze affecting several outbuildings near Ilminster, Somerset. At approximately 2am, emergency services received reports of a fire involving sheds and chicken coops in the Peasmarsh area, alongside initial concerns that people might be involved.

Responding swiftly, two fire engines from Chard were dispatched along with a pumping appliance from Ilminster and a Water Carrier from Yeovil, due to the rural location and limited nearby water supply. Upon arrival, crews found a smallholding engulfed in flames, with sheds, chicken coops, and surrounding fencing well alight.

After a prompt assessment, the Incident Commander confirmed that all individuals were safe and accounted for. It is believed that any chickens housed in the affected outbuildings were released safely before or during the response.

Firefighters immediately commenced tackling the fire to prevent further spread, utilising breathing apparatus, hose reel jets, a 51mm main attack jet, and thermal imaging cameras to detect hidden hotspots. The crews worked diligently to contain and extinguish the blaze.

Operations at the scene continued through the early morning to thoroughly damp down the affected area, with all units returning to their stations by 4.30am.
