Finn Russell Poised to Lead Bath to EPCR Challenge Cup Victory, Says Andy Goode

Finn Russell’s reputation as a ‘maverick’ fly-half may precede him, but according to two-time Champions Cup winner Andy Goode, the Scotland international has evolved into a well-rounded leader capable of guiding Bath Rugby to EPCR Challenge Cup success this Friday.

Fresh from being named for his third British & Irish Lions Tour, Russell is central to Bath’s ambitions of securing the second jewel in their treble pursuit. They face French side Lyon at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, with coverage exclusively live on Premier Sports 1 from 7pm.

Russell’s flair and daring style have long delighted fans, but Goode highlights his growth into a balanced and tactical No.10 who expertly manages the flow of the game. “Bath’s expansive and tight play is orchestrated by Finn,” said Goode, a key pundit for Premier Sports’ coverage of elite European club rugby.

“A few years ago, Finn was seen as unpredictable, always capable of spectacular plays. Now, he combines that creativity with game intelligence and composure, making Bath a formidable opponent this weekend.”

Despite Lyon boasting stars like Davit Niniashvili, Semi Radradra, and Vincent Rattez, and having won the Challenge Cup three years ago, Bath’s momentum this season is undeniable. They have already secured top spot in the Gallagher Premiership and claimed the Premiership Rugby Cup — their first silverware in 17 years — setting them up for a remarkable treble-winning campaign.

Goode also praised the significant turnaround under Bath’s coach Johann van Graan since his arrival in 2022. “Johann took over when Bath was near the bottom of the league, and their rise has been incredible. The club has smartly strengthened the squad, building depth and resilience,” he said.

“Bath’s pack is powerful, featuring world-class players like Beno Obano, Will Stuart, and Thomas du Toit. The coaching influence of Johann and Lee Blackett, who has brought an attacking mindset from his Wasps days, has elevated the team to new heights.”

While Bath enter the final as favourites, Goode warns Lyon will not be easy opponents, recalling their shock Challenge Cup victory over Toulon three years ago. “Lyon proved then they can defy the odds, so this clash promises intense competition.”

Premier Sports is the exclusive broadcaster of the Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup, bringing 80 live matches across the season, including this weekend’s finals on May 23 and 24 from the Principality Stadium.
