Fresh off a commanding display that helped the British and Irish Lions take a 2-0 lead in their series against Australia, Finn Russell has hailed his move to Bath Rugby as a key factor in elevating his game to world-class status.
Starting at fly-half in the dramatic second Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Russell showcased poise and skill as the Lions edged the Wallabies 29-26, putting them within reach of a clean sweep on the Australian tour. The Lions now chase a perfect series record, an achievement last recorded over 90 years ago.
Reflecting on the win, the Scottish standout — who joined Bath from Racing 92 in 2023 and recently extended his contract through 2028 — expressed his satisfaction: “Getting selected for the Lions is huge, but winning a series is something special. This is my third tour and my first series win; it means a lot to unite players from four nations and make a family through these weeks.”

Russell has been instrumental in the Lions' first series triumph since 2013, forming an influential half-back partnership with Ireland’s Jamison Gibson-Park. Widely regarded as the best fly-half globally, the 32-year-old has finally earned the recognition his talent commands, having guided Bath to a historic treble in the recent season.
“The style of rugby at Bath has taught me to take control differently, focusing on game management and strategic kicking rather than constant attacking,” he said. “That shift has improved my decision-making, and I’m really enjoying rugby right now. Some say it’s the most confident I’ve been, and it could be true.”
Bath’s remarkable 2024/25 campaign saw them clinch the Premiership Rugby Cup, EPCR Challenge Cup, and Gallagher Premiership trophy — their first major silverware in 17 years. With such success under his belt, Russell is poised to continue driving both club and country toward further glory.
“This past season and this series win are milestones for me,” Russell added. “Winning titles at Bath and now with the Lions is something truly special.”
