Frome residents are being encouraged to share their input on updated proposals for over 1,700 new residences at the southern periphery of their town. Initial plans for the Selwood Garden Community (SGC) were presented in August 2021, aiming to transform green fields between the A361 and the southern edge of Frome into a substantial new community.
After National Highways voiced concerns about the impact on the A36 between Frome and Bath, the decision on the original plans was postponed in April 2022. Subsequently, revised proposals relocating homes planned on the southern side of the A361 were introduced by Land Value Alliances in September 2022, drawing criticism from campaigners.
In an effort to address environmental concerns, the developer has put forward further modifications. It is expected that Somerset Council will rule on the plans by year-end. Of the 1,700 homes proposed, 30% will be affordable, equating to 510 homes, representing various low-cost options.

The development will feature a local center, community hub, over 25,000 sq m of employment space, two residential care homes totaling 105 beds, a 420-place primary school, playing fields, allotments, orchards, and new pedestrian and cycle routes. Additionally, improvements to the Beckington and White Post roundabouts are planned.
The proposed changes encompass various aspects of the planned ‘green infrastructure,’ including measures for habitat enhancement. The removal of the all-weather pitch will be compensated through off-site contributions, benefiting local pitch facilities.

Somerset Council’s decision is expected to be made public later this year by its planning committee east, responsible for major applications in the former Mendip area.
