Tragedy struck on the A303 near Ilminster as a pedestrian in his 70s lost his life after being struck by a van. The accident, which occurred between the Southfields roundabout and Shave Lane at 4.30 am on November 23, prompted an extensive 11-hour road closure.
Avon and Somerset Police revealed that the man is believed to have “fallen” before the collision took place. The family of the victim is receiving support from specially trained officers.
An official statement from the police urged potential witnesses to come forward, stating: “An investigation has been launched after a man sadly died following an incident on the A303.” The spokesperson further added, “Both the A303 and A358 were closed to allow enquiries to take place but reopened yesterday afternoon. We want to thank residents for their patience.”

The police have appealed to anyone traveling along the A303 around 4.15 am on the day of the incident to provide any relevant information by contacting 101 with reference number 5223286364 or by completing an online appeals form.
