This summer, steam enthusiasts and travelers across Somerset can look forward to the return of one of Britain’s most celebrated steam locomotives. No. 60163 Tornado, known as the fastest steam engine to run since the 1960s, is making its comeback to the main line. After an extensive overhaul that kept it off the rails for several years, the LNER Peppercorn Class A1 locomotive re-emerges sporting a striking new British Rail green livery.
Operating under The Railway Touring Company, Tornado will pull steam day trips departing from Bristol, Yatton, Taunton, and Exeter. Kelly Osborne, Managing Director of The Railway Touring Company, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust: “We’re thrilled to offer passengers the chance to travel behind Tornado and for countless others to witness this magnificent locomotive in action on the national rail network.”
Tornado’s reputation is well-earned. On test runs, it has achieved speeds up to 100 mph, making it the fastest steam locomotive in regular operation since the era of the 1960s. The summer schedule includes The Royal Duchy tour, with excursions from Bristol and surrounding stops to Plymouth and Par, set for Sundays May 25, July 27, and August 31.

Unique among steam engines, Tornado is a 21st-century creation, completed in 2008 as the first new main line steam locomotive built in the UK since 1960. Over the years, it has carried prestigious Royal Trains, starred in the film Paddington 2, and featured on television programs such as Top Gear. Having logged over 130,000 miles, Tornado continues to bring the golden age of steam into the modern era, thrilling audiences wherever it travels.
