Farm Shop Donates Surplus Produce to Combat Hunger and Food Waste in Rural Somerset and Devon

Rumwell Farm Shop, a family-run business located on the A38 between Taunton and Wellington, is actively addressing food waste and rural hunger by donating surplus fresh produce to the Hemyock Community Fridge. This initiative, operated by the Community Interest Company Foodsave and hosted at the Blackdown Healthy Living & Activity Centre, ensures good food is shared within the community rather than wasted.

Each week, Rumwell Farm Shop contributes items such as fresh fruit, vegetables, homemade baked goods, and other products to support local residents. Peta Dayus-Jones, manager of the Healthy Living Centre, highlighted the importance of these donations: “Rumwell Farm Shop’s generosity allows us to assist rural communities facing food insecurity in a sustainable and cost-free way. While it’s unfortunate that such support is necessary, the collaboration helps reduce food waste and feed those in need.”

Founded five years ago, Foodsave promotes zero food waste by collecting perfectly edible surplus food from local businesses and distributing it freely to anyone who requires it. Lucy White, shop manager at Rumwell Farm Shop, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership: “We are proud to contribute to Foodsave’s efforts. The cost-of-living crisis has severely impacted rural areas, making initiatives like this essential. Community Fridges help ensure surplus food is consumed instead of discarded, which benefits both people and the planet.”
