The family of John Lyttle, a beloved cyclist who tragically passed away following a collision with a van in Atworth, Wiltshire, have paid moving tribute to his adventurous spirit and lasting generosity.
John, 67, from Bradford-on-Avon, was involved in the accident on July 1 and died in hospital on July 10 after courageously fighting for his life. His family described him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and an inspiring member of his community, known for his big heart and unwavering kindness.
“John led a full and active life,” his family shared. “He was a husband, brother, father to four children, step-father to one, and grandfather to four grandchildren. His warmth and love touched everyone around him.”

An avid outdoorsman, John thrived on adventure. Whether cycling hundreds of miles each month, riding his motorbike, climbing mountains, or traveling to see his favorite bands live, he embraced every opportunity to experience the world with passion and energy. His family fondly recalled his love for freedom and exploration both at home and abroad.
John also dedicated much of his career to the medical field and was a committed volunteer through his local church, regularly helping those in need, including feeding the homeless in nearby Trowbridge. His faith and compassion were guiding forces throughout his life.
Despite the ordeal following his accident, John celebrated his 67th birthday in hospital before passing away peacefully. His family described his loss as a painful void but emphasized the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones.
In a final act of generosity, John was an organ donor, giving the priceless gift of life to three families. “Even in his last hours, John’s kindness shone brightly, transforming tragedy into hope for others,” they said.
The family expressed deep gratitude to the bystanders who administered CPR, the Wiltshire Air Ambulance crew, and the staff at Southmead Hospital for their dedicated care. “Knowing John received the best possible treatment brings us comfort,” they added.
Their tribute ended with a heartfelt message: “John’s adventurous spirit and giant heart live on in us. We will honor his memory by embracing life fully and loving one another, just as he did. Rest in peace, John.”
