The family of John Lyttle, a beloved cyclist who tragically died following a collision with a van in Wiltshire, have paid a heartfelt tribute to his adventurous spirit and remarkable generosity. John, 67, from Bradford-on-Avon, passed away in hospital on July 10, ten days after the accident in Atworth on July 1.
John’s family described him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a valued member of his community who dedicated much of his life to supporting others. “John was a deeply adventurous, loving, and kind man,” they shared. “He was a husband, brother, father to four, stepfather to one, and grandfather to four. His massive heart made him the life of many, always bringing warmth and joy to everyone around him.”
An active outdoorsman, John thrived on cycling, motorbiking, mountain climbing, and traveling—especially to see his favorite bands live. “He lived at the peak of his fitness and embraced freedom passionately. Whether on his bicycle or motorbike, John loved exploring the open road and embracing life to the fullest,” his family said.

John’s lifelong commitment to caring extended into his professional work in the medical field and his volunteer efforts at the local church. His faith guided him to help others, including regularly feeding the homeless in nearby Trowbridge.
Despite the severity of his injuries, John bravely fought for nine days in hospital and commemorated his 67th birthday before his passing. His family expressed their sorrow: “John was taken far too soon. His sudden loss leaves a profound emptiness but reminds us to cherish every moment with loved ones.”
In a final act of extraordinary kindness, John’s organ donation has given three families hope and extended life. “Even in our deepest grief, we are immensely proud that John’s legacy includes this ultimate gift of life to others,” his family noted.
They also expressed gratitude to the public who assisted immediately after the accident, the Wiltshire Air Ambulance team, and the dedicated staff at Southmead Hospital. “Thanks to those strangers who performed CPR, the amazing Wiltshire Air Ambulance crew, and every hospital staff member who gave John the best possible care—we are forever thankful,” they said.
The tribute closes with a poignant message: “John, your adventurous spirit and giant heart live on in our memories. We will honor you by living fully and loving as you did. Rest in peace.”
