Families Flock to Somerset Café Offering Free SEND Support and Legal Advice

A pioneering new café in Taunton, Somerset, is making waves by combining a welcoming social space with vital support services for families. The Den Coffee House, which officially opened its doors last weekend, offers free special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) support and legal advice alongside its usual menu of drinks and cakes.

The launch event saw over 150 visitors, with local MP Gideon Amos and Taunton’s Mayor, Councillor Martin Strauss, leading the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Situated next to the town library on Paul Street, The Den is the brainchild of Claire Naylor, founder of Coffee Chat and Support CIC, an organization known for providing free SEND clinics and legal advice.

Claire seized the opportunity to lease the space and develop a fully inclusive café designed with families in mind. “I’m overwhelmed by the positive response we’ve received ahead of the opening,” she said. “Having our own space means we can expand our services and offer a dedicated sensory area, complete with resources to keep children engaged and comfortable.”

The Den prioritizes accessibility with adaptive cutlery, inclusive seating, and an AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) device to assist non-verbal customers. A resource library is also available to visitors.

Beyond regular SEND clinics and legal advice sessions, Claire plans to launch new programs, including support groups for neurodivergent adults, youth social meet-ups, and carers’ support groups. She is currently recruiting volunteers for various roles, such as baristas and activity coordinators, with training provided.

Local MP Gideon Amos praised The Den as an invaluable addition to the community. “With many parents navigating the complex SEND system, The Den offers essential support and reassurance,” he said. “SEND children and their families deserve steadfast support, and I strongly oppose any measures that would undermine their rights. I’m even volunteering to help behind the coffee bar—though I’ll definitely need some training!”

The Den Coffee House operates Monday through Saturday, with Fridays reserved for private bookings by schools and community organizations. Those interested in volunteering can reach out to Claire via [email protected].
