A pioneering coffee shop in Taunton is redefining community support by combining a welcoming café environment with free SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) support and legal advice. The Den Coffee House celebrated its official launch over the weekend, welcoming more than 150 visitors.
Local MP Gideon Amos and Taunton’s Mayor, Cllr Martin Strauss, joined the festivities to cut the ribbon and open the space, located next to the town library on Paul Street. The Den was created by Claire Naylor, founder of Coffee Chat and Support CIC, who transformed the lease opportunity into a haven for families in need of inclusive support services.
“I’m overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response leading up to our launch,” said Claire. “Securing this space means we can broaden our services and offer a sensory-friendly environment alongside engaging activities to keep children happy.”

The Den offers a full menu of drinks and cakes, with accessibility features such as adaptive cutlery, specialized seating, an AAC device for non-verbal customers, and a resource library. Beyond the café, Claire regularly runs SEND clinics and legal advice sessions and plans to host additional support groups, including neurodivergent adult sessions, youth meet-ups, and carers’ groups.
Claire is actively recruiting volunteers for diverse roles, from baristas to activity coordinators, offering training to those interested in joining the team. “There are many ways people can help, and we warmly welcome anyone who wants to get involved,” she said.
Local MP Gideon Amos praised The Den as a “tremendous asset for Taunton,” emphasizing the importance of support for families navigating the SEND system. “I am committed to ensuring SEND children and their families receive the support they deserve,” he remarked. “I’ve even offered to volunteer as a barista—I’ll definitely need some training!”
The Den Coffee House operates Monday through Saturday, with Fridays reserved for private bookings by schools and community groups. Families and community members looking to volunteer or learn more can contact Claire at [email protected].
