Falklands War Tribute of 255 Giant Figures Unveiled at Nothe Fort

This November, visitors to Dorset’s iconic Nothe Fort in Weymouth will encounter a moving tribute to the lives lost during the 1982 Falklands War: a dramatic installation of 255 life-sized silhouetted figures. Created by remembrance charity Standing With Giants, the exhibition runs from Wednesday, November 5 to Sunday, November 30 and offers a poignant space for reflection on the sacrifices made during the conflict.

The “Falklands Tribute” features figures crafted from recycled materials, representing British service members and civilians who perished in the war. This installation mirrors a twin exhibit displayed in the Falkland Islands, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the war’s end. Positioned across the fort’s parade ground, the silhouettes allow visitors to walk among the representations of those remembered, creating an immersive and thoughtful experience.

Dan Barton, an Oxfordshire-based community artist and the founder of Standing With Giants, shared his gratitude: “We have been deeply moved by the heartfelt reactions from veterans and families of the fallen who visit the installations and share their stories.”

Mary-Anne Edwards, co-general manager of Nothe Fort, expressed pride in hosting the tribute. “The parade ground provides a fitting backdrop for this exhibition, and we’ve been touched by the support from community and veteran groups helping with installation and stewardship. We’re excited to welcome visitors to engage with the silhouettes and honor those represented.”

The exhibition is sponsored by Portland Port and received national attention with a feature on BBC Breakfast, heightening public awareness of this limited-time event.

On select dates — November 5, 8, 15, 16, 22, and 23 — visitors will have the chance to meet Falklands veterans and hear personal stories from the conflict. Details will be available on arrival.

Admission is included with entry to Nothe Fort. It’s free for Annual Pass holders, Falklands veterans, and their immediate families without booking. Other veterans and currently serving armed forces may purchase concession tickets at £8.95.

A special designated figure will be available for visitors to leave wreaths, flowers, or tokens of remembrance. Additionally, The Keep Military Museum will hold a pop-up exhibition during the tribute, and Nothe Fort’s café will provide refreshments throughout the event.
