Extra £174.50 TV Licences Required for Some UK Homes – Who Must Pay?

The cost of a TV Licence in the UK increased to £174.50 starting April 1, 2025, marking the second rise since 2021. This annual fee is mandatory for households and businesses that watch or record live TV, including live streaming on platforms like Netflix, YouTube, and BBC iPlayer.

Generally, only one licence is needed per household, but rules differ for those who own a second home or caravan. In specific cases, an additional TV Licence must be purchased for a second property, potentially doubling the cost to £349.

An extra licence is required if you watch live TV or use BBC iPlayer at a secondary residence such as a house, flat, bungalow, or cottage. The only exception is if the devices at that property operate solely on internal batteries without connection to an aerial or mains power — in which case, your main home’s licence will cover you.

However, different guidelines apply to touring caravans, static caravans, boats, mobile homes, or moveable chalets. Your main home’s TV Licence generally covers live TV viewing at these locations unless broadcasts are watched simultaneously at both places. If simultaneous viewing occurs, you must complete a brief declaration form, available in English and Welsh.

Failure to comply with licensing rules can result in prosecution, with possible penalties including a fine of up to £1,000, legal costs, and compensation. The standard colour TV Licence fee is now £174.50 per year, while the black-and-white licence costs £58.50 annually.

The recent 2.9% increase in licence fees was confirmed by the Secretary of State and reflects annual Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation. Future fee adjustments will also be linked to CPI inflation through 2027.

In summary, if you own more than one property and use it for viewing live TV or BBC iPlayer, it’s essential to check whether an additional TV Licence is required to avoid penalties and ensure compliance.
