Worle is set to undergo months of roadworks as a new 20mph speed limit zone is introduced on the High Street and surrounding areas. The works are scheduled to start on Monday, 5 October and are expected to continue until spring next year.
The project includes more than just speed limit changes. Plans encompass the installation of new pedestrian crossings, upgraded bus shelters featuring additional seating and green roofs, resurfacing of pavements, and their widening to improve accessibility.
Councillor Hugh Maylan, cabinet member for highways and transport at North Somerset Council, emphasised the community-led nature of the changes. He stated, “These changes have been shaped directly by community feedback, reflecting what residents and businesses have told us matters most, from safety and accessibility to the look and feel of the area. It’s about making changes that respond to how people use the High Street every day.”

Traffic flow adjustments will also be implemented: The Scaurs will become a one-way street heading northbound, while Ebdon Road will be one-way southbound. In addition, The Maltings will benefit from new seating, planting, and cycle parking facilities.
Some preliminary roadworks have already commenced at the junctions of Nutwell Road, Greenwood Road, and Martins Grove, with completion expected during the October half-term.
These developments form part of a larger Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), backed by central government funding aimed at enhancing local bus services.
Residents with queries about the scheme are encouraged to visit the contractor drop-in centre, located near the junction of Queensway and Walford Avenue. The centre operates every Wednesday from 8am to 4pm.
