A significant programme of roadworks is set to commence in Worle, beginning on Monday, 5 October, and continuing until spring next year. The works will introduce a new 20mph speed limit along Worle High Street and its surrounding areas, aiming to improve safety and accessibility for residents and visitors alike.
In addition to the speed limit reduction, the scheme includes a range of enhancements such as the installation of new pedestrian crossings, upgraded bus shelters featuring increased seating capacity and environmentally friendly green roofs, as well as pavement resurfacing and widening works to improve pedestrian movement.
Councillor Hugh Maylan, cabinet member for highways and transport at North Somerset Council, explained that the plans have been developed in close consultation with the local community. He emphasised that the changes reflect feedback from residents and businesses, focusing on safety, accessibility, and enhancing the overall atmosphere of the High Street. “It’s about making changes that respond to how people use the High Street every day,” he said.

The project also includes alterations to traffic flow: The Scaurs will be designated as a one-way street heading northbound, while Ebdon Road will become one-way southbound. Further improvements are planned at The Maltings, where new seating, landscaping, and cycle parking facilities will be added.
Preliminary works have already begun at the Nutwell Road, Greenwood Road, and Martins Grove junctions, with these sections expected to be completed by the October half-term holiday.
These developments form part of a broader Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), funded by central government to support local councils in upgrading public transport services.
North Somerset Council is inviting residents who have questions about the ongoing works to visit the contractor drop-in centre, located near the junction of Queensway and Walford Avenue. The centre is open every Wednesday from 8am to 4pm, providing an opportunity for the community to engage with those managing the project.
