Extended Road Closure on Walford Avenue in Weston-super-Mare Begins

Starting Monday, June 8, a section of Walford Avenue in Weston-super-Mare will be partially closed for up to six months as part of a significant road improvement project. Initially, the stretch between Queensway Junction will be closed, with a full closure expected to follow at a later date.

North Somerset Council described the closure as a trial aimed at addressing longstanding community concerns about traffic congestion. The council will carefully monitor the effects of the closure to evaluate its impact on local traffic.

Councillor Hugh Malyan, cabinet member for highways and transport, emphasized the importance of managing congestion at key junctions like Queensway to ensure smooth movement for residents and goods alike. “This trial responds directly to feedback from residents and road users, with the goal of simplifying junction operations and reducing delays, particularly for those traveling into Worle from the motorway," he said.

While the changes may require some residents, especially those leaving the St Georges area, to take alternative routes during the trial, the council is committed to listening to public feedback and optimizing the plan accordingly.

During the closure, a clearly signed diversion route will direct traffic via Walford Avenue and Wansborough Road back to Queensway. Traffic signals at the Walford Avenue junction will be temporarily disabled, although signals at the nearby Bristol Road junction will remain active. Left turns from Queensway into Walford Avenue will still be permitted during the trial phase.

This road closure is part of a broader transport enhancement scheme along Queensway that promises upgraded junctions, safer pedestrian and cyclist crossings, and modernized traffic management systems. The project aims to reduce journey times, especially during peak periods.

Motorists are advised to expect delays, allow extra travel time, and follow all diversion signage during the roadworks.
