Fast forward to today, and pizza’s status has transformed dramatically. It now spans a wide spectrum—from inexpensive fast-food slices to extravagant creations topped with gold leaf that can cost a small fortune.
Nestled in the heart of Bath, Dough is a pizzeria that finds its place somewhere in the middle of this spectrum. While not the cheapest option, with a margherita priced at £13.95 and a meat feast at £19.95, Dough differentiates itself with a creative edge: unique and unconventional pizza bases.

Why settle for classic sourdough when you can experiment? For an additional £2, patrons can try a hemp base, a multigrain crust crafted from seven different flours and seeds, or one infused with turmeric. For a £3.95 upcharge, more adventurous diners might opt for a salty, gluten-free seaweed base or a vibrant purple corn crust—definitely a far cry from traditional Neapolitan recipes.
This innovative approach helps Dough carve out a distinctive niche in Bath’s crowded pizza scene. Purple corn pizza, in particular, is a rare find and an intriguing departure from typical offerings.
For my visit, I chose a ham and mushroom pizza on the hemp base, priced at £19.95. It arrived promptly, topped generously. The pizza was thin with crusts that stayed pleasantly doughy. The hemp base imparted a rich, earthy flavor, introducing a novel twist without overpowering the classic toppings. While sourdough remains a timeless favorite, the hemp crust certainly holds its own—making the extra £2 well worth the adventurous spirit.
Dough’s inventive bases and quality ingredients justify its premium prices, especially if you appreciate culinary creativity. I’m already looking forward to trying the seaweed base on my next visit.
