Explore the Beauty of Bath at the 2024 Bathscape Walking Festival

Bathscape Walking Festival returns for its eighth year from September 6 to 21, inviting walkers of all ages and abilities to explore the stunning landscapes and rich history of Bath and its surroundings. This year’s festival features over 50 events—most of which are free—offering something for families, groups, and solo adventurers alike.

New to the programme are several unique walks, including a five-mile historical tour of central Bath conducted entirely in British Sign Language by Alison Wherry-Alimo. For a multi-sensory experience, participants can enjoy an accessible exploration of Henrietta Park designed to engage all senses. Additionally, artist and Bathscape walk leader Karen Woodfield presents a captivating three-hour immersive walk that combines photography and outdoor discovery.

Marking the 80th anniversary of Bath’s twinning with Alkmaar, Netherlands, the twinning association teams up with the National Trust for a scenic four-and-a-half-hour walk from Bath city center to Bathford, featuring a picnic stop. This event takes place on September 11.

Bath’s surrounding landscape played a pivotal role in the 18th-century Picturesque movement. Dr. Amy Frost will lead walks on September 6 and 11 exploring how literary figures like Jane Austen and William Beckford engaged with these landscapes both in their writings and lives.

Councillor Sarah Warren, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Bath and North East Somerset, emphasizes the festival’s value: “With more than 50 walks—many free—the Bathscape Walking Festival offers a wonderful way to connect with the city’s green spaces, reflect on its history, and consider how we can protect the landscape for future generations.”

Festival favorites make a return, such as bat walks in Kensington Meadows on September 12 and Weston on September 20. The challenging 20-mile Circuit of Bath Walk for Julian House occurs on September 21, with a shuttle bus service to assist those who prefer not to complete the entire route.

Charity enthusiasts can join a 5-mile walk around Bath Spa’s campus supporting Parkinson’s UK for £12 per adult. Meanwhile, participants in the BigBanes100k can use festival walks to accumulate miles for Mentoring Plus and Off the Record.
