Experience Yuletide magic at Somerset’s medieval castle

Step back in time and journey into a winter wonderland at Dunster Castle in the heart of Somerset. The National Trust-owned medieval fortress is set to be transformed into a festive haven, showcasing the traditions of Yuletide within its ancient walls.

Originally built as a timber castle by William de Mohun in the 11th century, the castle has a rich history of reconstruction and expansion by the Luttrell family, who resided there for centuries. The property, now a Grade I-listed building, was generously bequeathed to the National Trust by Colonel Walter Luttrell in 1976.

Throughout December, visitors can relish the enchanting decorations adorning the castle’s rooms, providing a glimpse into festive celebrations of bygone eras. The house will be adorned with natural garlands created from garden plants, complemented by elegantly adorned trees.

Guests can partake in engaging activities such as games in the Morning Room, costume dress-up in the Hat Room, and a delightful hunt for knitted robins hidden throughout the castle. The castle welcomes visitors from 10 am to 4 pm on weekends in December, and from December 16 to January 1 on a daily basis.

The Watermill Tea Room offers a delectable selection of festive treats, including spiced apple juice, mulled wine, and seasonal cakes. Additionally, the picturesque Somerset countryside can be admired from the parkland and car park, with opportunities to explore Conygar Tower, Bat’s Castle, or Grabbist Hill.

The Christmas season also sees the opening of the Watermill, where visitors can learn about the milling process and witness the transformation of flour. The gardens, including the South Terrace, Keep, and River Garden, provide a tranquil setting for leisurely strolls and exploration, with the natural play area offering a space for younger visitors to enjoy.

Moreover, The Stables Gift Shop presents a variety of festive gifts for those seeking to find a special memento of their visit. A National Trust representative expressed, “There are several places to enjoy a bite to eat and a drink during your visit to Dunster Castle and Watermill. The shops here are also brimming with items, enabling you to pick up a treat for yourself or the perfect gift for a friend.”
