As winter unfolds with its long nights and brief days, it’s the perfect time to wrap up and make the most of the daylight by embarking on a countryside excursion with your loved ones.
For many families, the holiday season is the only time when everyone comes together, making a brisk country walk an ideal opportunity to reconnect and relish some quality time together while taking in the crisp winter air. In Somerset, we are blessed with numerous splendid walks boasting breathtaking countryside and scenery, often accompanied by charming country pubs serving delectable food and beverages.
Among these walks, one stands out - the Bath Skyline Walk, lauded by the Sunday Times as one of the nation’s best. This short stroll around Bath, easily accessible by train, bus, or car, also comes highly recommended by The Guardian.

What sets this walk apart is the climb up the steep southern hills, providing jaw-dropping views of the magnificent city of Bath. At certain points, you feel so high it seems like you could descend into the city, with the imposing Bath Abbey dominating the skyline above the beautiful architecture that Bath is renowned for.
Another unique aspect is its proximity to the city center. It’s rare to find such splendid countryside just minutes away from the heart of the city. Around Christmas time, this walk becomes even more special.
To access the Bath Skyline Walk, managed by the National Trust, the most convenient way is to ascend Bathwick Hill from the city center. For drivers, parking in the vicinity of Bathwick Hill is recommended. While the walk is steep and hilly, there’s no obligation to complete the entire six-mile route in one go, especially if some family members might find it challenging.
On a prior Christmas Day, I stumbled upon a large family gathering on this route, seated on picnic chairs, sipping champagne, and savoring the views.
This outdoor activity is not only safe but also offers breathtaking vistas. From this elevated vantage point, you’ll see Bath in a whole new light, offering a delightful spot to watch trains arriving and departing from Bath Spa station.
As you journey, you could take a break in Widcombe and relish a pint or a snack at The Ring O Bells or The White Hart, two exceptional pubs, or indulge in lunch at Widcombe Deli. It’s a delightful activity to partake in with your family around Christmas, right at our doorstep.
