Expansion Underway for Somerset’s Popular Cycling Route

The scenic Strawberry Line active travel route in Somerset is undergoing expansion, with work currently in progress to bridge a significant gap in the path. The route, which currently stretches from Yatton railway station to Station Road in Cheddar, is set to be extended to Shepton Mallet with the installation of a new bridge over a main road.

The latest phase of the project will connect existing sections, creating a continuous and safe pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, eliminating the need to venture onto main roads. Once completed, the route will allow easy access from Collett Park in Shepton Mallet to the surrounding countryside and eventually link to the path from Wells.

The expansion project involves the construction of slopes with a gentle gradient to accommodate mobility scooters and comply with government guidelines. Additionally, plans include the installation of a lightweight bridge to facilitate access to the playing fields, skate park, and football stadium, ensuring a seamless connection with the existing path to Ridge Road.

The completed Strawberry Line is part of the larger ‘Somerset Circle’, which aims to establish a 76-mile traffic-free route linking key locations in the region. The route features a three-meter-wide path with an all-season dusted limestone surface, catering to a diverse range of users.
