Dovecote School, located in Shapwick near Bridgwater, has been gearing up to expand its provision for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) after receiving positive feedback from Ofsted. The school, currently catering for 84 pupils, aims to increase its capacity to 130 pupils and extend the upper age limit from 18 to 19. The recent material change inspection by Ofsted in February 2025 concluded that the school is well positioned to meet the relevant independent school standards with the proposed expansion.
CEO Jason Goddard expressed his delight at the confirmation from Ofsted, attributing it to the dedication of the school team and the strength of their vision, alongside the support from parents.
Dovecote School exclusively serves pupils with education, health and care (EHC) plans, with many having communication and interaction needs or social, emotional, and mental health difficulties. The school’s personalized curriculum pathways, based on the EHC plans, undergo regular reviews to tailor learning goals for each pupil. Assessment is utilized effectively to customize academic and therapeutic programs, enabling students to progress from their existing abilities.

In addition to academic learning, Dovecote School focuses on equipping its pupils with life skills through personal, social, health, and economic (PSHE) education. This includes providing career guidance, fostering cultural development, and promoting community engagement through initiatives such as a community café and visits to local care homes.
Ofsted also highlighted the school’s strong culture of safeguarding, the effective implementation of its safeguarding policy, and the consistent training provided to staff. The report emphasized that the school takes prompt and suitable action on matters concerning behavior and attendance, further underlining its commitment to the welfare of its pupils.
In conclusion, Ofsted acknowledged Dovecote School’s readiness to meet the requirements for the proposed expansion, reflecting its dedication to providing quality education and support to pupils with complex needs.
