Exmoor Launches Two-Week Festival Celebrating Wildlife and Wellbeing

Exmoor National Park is set to host its much-anticipated two-week Exmoor Nature Festival, starting Saturday, May 17, and running through Sunday, June 1. With over 50 events planned, the festival offers a unique opportunity for nature enthusiasts of all ages to explore and celebrate the area’s rich wildlife while promoting health and wellbeing.

Supported by Visit Exmoor, the festival features a diverse lineup of outdoor activities. Visitors can enjoy guided wildlife walks, children’s art sessions, forest school days, and early morning bird listening tours—ensuring there is something for everyone.

One highlight includes the Pop Up Wildlife Day at Tarr Steps on Sunday, May 18, from 11 am to 3 pm. Families are invited to partake in free nature activities, with donations encouraged for the CareMoor for Exmoor conservation fund.

That same day marks the launch of the Exmoor Fungus Group at the Root Project in Oare. This free event offers expert guidance on fungi identification and insights into what species to look for this season.

On Tuesday, May 20, a Dawn Chorus Bird Walk will begin at 5 am from Ashcombe Car Park in Simonsbath. Priced at £5 per person, proceeds from this early morning event will benefit the CareMoor for Exmoor fund.

Children can engage creatively at the Dunster National Park Centre on Monday, May 26, with nature-themed art sessions led by Sophie Tyler from the Exmoor National Park team. These two-hour workshops require booking in advance, and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Also on May 26, Lynmouth will host a Coastal Wildlife Day. Morning activities include rockpool exploration, followed by an afternoon session featuring international raptor expert Zoe Smith discussing white-tailed sea eagles. The event is free, with crafts for children and optional donations welcomed for CareMoor.

The Big Family Nature Day happens Thursday, May 29, at Haddon Hill Car Park. This full day of fun includes den building, forest school activities, and opportunities to see Exmoor ponies, all designed to connect families with nature.

Julie Colman, rural enterprise co-ordinator at Exmoor National Park, said, “We’re thrilled to launch this incredible program of events. National Parks exist to support the nation’s health and wellbeing, and this festival offers a meaningful chance for people to engage with nature. We hope participants not only learn about Exmoor’s flora and fauna but are inspired to help protect this extraordinary landscape.”

Printed programmes are available at National Park Centres in Dulverton, Dunster, and Lynmouth, open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. The full digital programme can be accessed at exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk/exmoor-nature-festival.
