Ex-Somerset Football CEO Among 13 Men Facing Trial for Alleged Drug-Facilitated Sexual Abuse

A former chief executive officer of Taunton Town Football Club, Karl Lindsay, is one of 13 men set to face trial in what has been described as Britain’s largest case involving alleged drug-facilitated sexual abuse perpetrated by a husband against his wife over a 20-year period.

The case emerged publicly on Friday, June 26, following the lifting of reporting restrictions after a court hearing reported by the Manchester Evening News.

Karl Lindsay, 55, who stepped down from his role at the non-league football club last year, stands charged alongside 13 other men. In total, 14 men face charges connected to this complex investigation. Thirteen of them, including Lindsay, will go to trial in September.

The central figure in the case is a man in his 60s from Stockport, identified only to protect the anonymity of his wife, the sole victim. He is accused of conspiring with others to drug and rape his wife while she was unconscious. This man has admitted to several offenses, including five counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, six counts of assault by penetration, and one count of sharing intimate photos or films without consent. He has denied drugging his wife but denies 48 other charges that span two decades.

Among the co-defendants, Lindsay faces three charges: conspiracy to rape, conspiracy to commit assault by penetration, and conspiracy to administer a substance with intent. He has pleaded not guilty.

Other accused men come from Greater Manchester and as far afield as Kent, Scotland, and Derbyshire. One individual, Keith Fotheringham from Dundee, pleaded guilty earlier this year and is awaiting sentencing.

The accused face a wide range of serious charges, including conspiracy to rape, sexual assault, and the administration of noxious substances. Despite the gravity of the allegations, several defendants have denied all charges against them.

The upcoming trial marks a significant legal proceeding into the horrifying and complex nature of spousal drug-facilitated sexual abuse in the UK.
