Karl Lindsay, 55, the former chief executive of Taunton Town Football Club, stands accused alongside 12 other men in Britain’s largest known case involving a husband allegedly drugging his wife and orchestrating sexual assaults with multiple accomplices over two decades.
The charges came to light following a court hearing on June 26, when reporting restrictions were lifted. Lindsay resigned from his football club role last year and now faces trial this September as part of a complex investigation centered on drug-facilitated sexual abuse.
At the heart of the case is a man in his 60s from Stockport, who is the primary suspect accused of conspiring to drug his wife and facilitating her rape while she was unconscious. This man has admitted to five counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, six counts of assault by penetration, and one count related to sharing intimate images. However, he denies charges relating to drugging his wife. He has pleaded guilty to 15 out of 48 charges so far and denies the remainder, including 16 counts of rape connected to offenses spanning 20 years.

Among the 14 men charged, 13 will stand trial. Besides Lindsay, currently pleading not guilty to conspiracy to rape, assault by penetration, and administering a substance with intent, other defendants hail from across the UK, including Greater Manchester, Kent, Scotland, and Derbyshire.
One defendant, Keith Fotheringham, 59, from Dundee, has pleaded guilty to all his charges and awaits sentencing.
Further accused individuals face various counts involving conspiracy to rape, assault by penetration, sexual assault, attempted rape, and administering harmful substances. All have entered not guilty pleas.
This case marks an unprecedented scale of criminal proceedings uncovered in Britain concerning prolonged drug-facilitated sexual abuse, underscoring the seriousness and complexity of the investigation.
