Ex-soldiers excel in AI and extremism awareness course rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted

Bath Spa University has received high praise from Ofsted for a unique skills boot camp designed specifically for ex-military personnel transitioning back into civilian life. The course has earned an ‘Outstanding’ rating across all evaluation areas, highlighting its success in teaching participants vital modern skills, including artificial intelligence (AI) utilization and methods to avoid extremist views.

Hosted both online and at Corsham Court in Wiltshire, the program currently serves about 20 students, many of whom are in the process of leaving military service. Ofsted’s recent inspection, published on September 12, commended the course’s inclusion of AI training in response to workforce needs. The university’s employer advisory group identified a demand for stronger AI capability, prompting leaders to integrate a variety of AI tools focused on project management into the curriculum.

Crucially, the course also addresses the sensitive topic of radicalisation. Teaching staff provide insightful and non-judgmental guidance on recognizing and safeguarding against extremist ideologies. They are acutely aware of the risks faced by learners who may be socially isolated and primarily consume information through social media and online platforms, offering support tailored to these vulnerabilities.

Learners, many of whom had been out of education, training, or employment for extended periods, benefit significantly. The program boosts their self-esteem and highlights the value of their newly acquired skills. Following completion, nearly all participants progress to self-employment, paid work, or higher education pathways.

Despite the university’s broader academic offerings, Ofsted noted that these adult learners receive equal treatment to traditional undergraduates. This inclusive environment ensures full access to university resources, benefits, and support.

The course achieved ‘Outstanding’ ratings in quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, as well as leadership and management.

A spokesperson for Bath Spa University told Somerset Live that the institution is committed to supporting all learners, including military veterans, through safeguarding and Prevent strategies. The skills boot camp in Agile Foundation and AI awards two recognized professional certifications, aligning with both regional and national workforce demands. The university aims to collaborate continuously with local businesses and organizations to develop relevant, impactful learning opportunities.
