In the latest emotional episode of BBC’s Escape to the Country, choirmaster and TV personality Gareth Malone surprised fans by taking his mum, Sian, house-hunting instead of his wife. The celebrity edition, aired on December 22, followed Gareth’s search for a new home for his family of five as they considered moving from London to the tranquility of Hampshire.
Viewers expressed confusion on social media about Gareth’s decision to bring his mother on the house tour rather than his wife. Comments included, “Married with three kids and you take your mum house hunting,” and “Why not take his wife?” Despite the initial surprise, many appreciated the close bond between Gareth and his mum, especially as the show noted she lived nearby.
Gareth’s search took him through the New Forest area, a place filled with childhood memories. Walking the countryside, he reflected emotionally, saying, “I feel quite emotional coming back here… it was beautiful then and it is still beautiful.” Although he didn’t finalize a property, he described the experience as a meaningful journey and learning curve, gaining clarity about what he truly wants in a home.
