Escape to the Country Buyers Abandon Somerset Dream Following Property U-Turn

In a recent episode of the BBC’s Escape to the Country aired on May 11, a mother-and-daughter pair, Diana and Millie, faced an emotional twist as they reconsidered their dream of moving to the Somerset countryside. Leaving their Bristol home behind, they sought a picturesque property that could accommodate their aspirations and lifestyle.

Diana, planning to retire from her bookkeeping career, and 20-year-old Millie, a medical secretary recently engaged to Alfie, shared a close bond. Millie expressed, “I do everything with my mum, and I wouldn’t change it,” while Diana reminisced about their travels and shared humor that deepens their connection.

With an £800,000 budget, their ideal property was a charming detached cottage or farmhouse featuring three bedrooms and potential for a bed and breakfast business. They also hoped for at least an acre of land to cultivate a flower garden business, complete with an outbuilding for tools and equipment.

Host Alistair Appleton highlighted how unique their search was, noting Millie’s uncommon desire to move in with her mother at her age. The duo toured properties including a Grade II-listed home and a Georgian thatched cottage. A “mystery house” presented a surprise: a 17th-century cottage offering an exquisite pleasure garden rather than the working garden they envisioned, along with an already successful B&B.

Diana and Millie were enchanted by the cottage despite the garden differing from their original dream. Diana expressed optimism about revisiting the property and potentially making an offer. However, after returning to Bristol, they reconsidered. The upstairs space felt insufficient for their future family’s needs, leading them to forego a second viewing and continue their property search elsewhere.

Their story underscores the twists and compromises often involved in finding the perfect countryside home.
