Escape to the Country Buyers Abandon Dream Home After Somerset Property U-Turn

In the latest episode of BBC’s Escape to the Country, airing May 11, a mother and daughter duo faced an unexpected twist in their quest for the perfect Somerset home. Diana and Millie, who were eager to leave their Bristol residence behind, embarked on a journey to find a charming countryside property that could fulfill their ambitions.

Diana, preparing for retirement from her bookkeeping career, and 20-year-old Millie, a medical secretary recently engaged to Alfie, shared a close bond. “I do everything with my mum, and I wouldn’t change it,” Millie expressed. Diana added, “We’ve traveled together and share the same sense of humor—we truly enjoy our time together.”

With a generous budget of £800,000, their wishlist included a detached cottage or farmhouse featuring at least three bedrooms and the potential to operate a bed and breakfast. They also dreamed of acquiring an acre or more of land to cultivate their flower garden business, complete with outbuildings for their tools and equipment.

Host Alistair Appleton emphasized the uniqueness of their search, noting Millie’s unusual desire to move in with her mother at a time when most young adults seek independence.

The property tour included a Grade II-listed home and a Georgian thatched cottage in Charlton Mackrell. The highlight was the “mystery house” in Great Elm, a 17th-century cottage with a lucrative B&B opportunity and an exquisite pleasure garden, though it lacked the extensive garden space they envisioned for their flower business.

Despite quickly falling for the character and charm of the historic cottage, Diana and Millie faced a dilemma. The limited upstairs space in the mystery house did not meet their growing family’s needs. After careful consideration, they decided against a second viewing and have chosen to continue their search for the ideal home elsewhere.

Their experience highlights the complexities and compromises often involved in finding a dream home, especially when balancing practical needs with passions and long-term plans.
