Competitors from near and far will converge on Franklyns Farm, Chewton Mendip, for the much-anticipated Mendip Ploughing Match, taking place on Wednesday, 24th September. Hosted generously by Messrs L, S & O Clothier, this event promises a thrilling showcase of farming skill and heritage.
This year’s match features the 2025 National Vintage Area Finals, serving as qualifiers for the prestigious 2026 British National Ploughing Championships. Contenders will compete across various categories, including trailing, hydraulic, classic, classic reversible, and Ferguson T20 ploughing.
Additional classes cater to a wide range of ploughing styles: horse ploughing, high cut, novice and open conventional, novice and open reversible, semi digger, Ferguson, and horticultural ploughing.

Complementing the ploughing contests, the hedge laying and stone walling competitions highlight traditional craftsmanship. Hedge layers will demonstrate the art of rejuvenating overgrown hedgerows, while stone wallers skillfully dismantle and rebuild walls to preserve rural heritage.
Farmers are invited to exhibit samples of grain, roots, and forage, showcasing the diversity of local produce. For a touch of fun, novelty competitions for the heaviest pumpkin and largest sunflower are open to all visitors.
The day’s events run from 10am to 3pm, with prize and trophy presentations scheduled between 4pm and 5pm.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of refreshments prepared by the ladies committee, including lunch, burgers, hot dogs, tea, coffee, and cakes. A bar will also be on-site, serving beers, ciders, wines, and spirits. Please note that only cash payments are accepted, as card facilities are not available.
Raffle tickets will be sold in the marquee, with a first prize of £50 and many other donated prizes. The draw will be held on the event day.
For added convenience, free trailer rides will transport spectators around the ploughing grounds, enhancing the viewing experience.
Best of all, admission and car parking are completely free, inviting everyone to join in celebrating this cherished agricultural tradition.
