If you park on Vale Street in Totterdown, Bristol, don’t forget to engage your handbrake—otherwise, you might find your car rolling downhill without you. Known since 2019 as England’s steepest street, Vale Street is a formidable challenge for drivers and pedestrians alike.
This short but steep road stretches just 0.2 km, yet rises 17 meters with an average gradient of 22 degrees. Such an incline demands respect: staircases line both sides to help residents navigate the climb on foot. Running to the end of the street in your nightwear just to fetch takeout isn’t out of the ordinary here.
The slope complicates daily life. Deliveries are tricky, parking is daunting, and winter only makes things harder. Local resident Appleby-Tyler, who has lived on Vale Street for over a decade, describes the icy months as especially challenging. “We have to wear crampons—small studs for our shoes—to avoid slipping,” he says. Others chain themselves to lampposts for stability, while some drivers park sideways to stop their cars from rolling away.

Despite the drawbacks, locals have embraced Vale Street’s unique character. The incline has become a fun feature for community events like Easter egg-rolling competitions, where boiled eggs race down the hill. Surprisingly, the steepness also means plentiful parking since many drivers avoid the street altogether.
Boardwalk Estate Agents highlights Totterdown’s charm beyond the hill: “With vibrant Victorian terraces, thriving local businesses, and a strong community spirit, it’s a welcoming place to live despite the steep challenges.”
Vale Street made headlines again in 2020 when a new Banksy artwork appeared at its base—a woman sneezing with dentures flying out. Though the piece was soon sold and removed, its appearance added to the street’s quirky reputation.
If you’re not heading out to San Francisco but crave a taste of dramatic slopes, Vale Street is only about 119 miles from London, roughly a three-hour drive or less than two and a half hours by train and bus.
