Charities such as National Debtline, StepChange, and Citizens Advice also provide free debt advice. Since energy arrears are considered priority debts, it’s crucial to address these payments before other debts like credit cards to avoid disconnection of energy supply.
Citizens Advice stresses that energy suppliers are obliged to work with customers to find repayment arrangements. “You should try to negotiate a deal that works for both of you,” they advise. Failure to negotiate could lead to disconnection threats, but suppliers often prefer to set up affordable payment plans or temporarily suspend payments if needed.
Consumers should be cautious about potential scams involving fraudsters posing as energy providers. To protect personal information, only use verified contact details when communicating with your supplier.
Additional financial help may also be available from the government, depending on energy type, payment methods, and benefit eligibility. Many energy providers offer grants to help clear outstanding balances, usually requiring proof of engagement with a debt adviser or a financial assessment from an FCA-approved expert.
