Nestled in the quaint village of Saltford in North East Somerset, The Crown is a delightful example of a traditional English pub enhanced by creative interior touches. This Grade II listed building dates back to the late Stuart period, welcoming visitors with classic features like a coal-fired fireplace, leather armchairs, and an intriguing wooden trap door steeped in history.
Step beyond the front room and you’ll discover The Crown’s distinctive character brought to life through thoughtful design. Rustic wooden beams stretch across the ceiling, while garlands of white flowers elegantly frame chandeliers. A cozy coffee station invites a relaxed pause, and the bar offers an ambitious selection of cocktails to suit many tastes.
Among its most charming spaces is the Buddha Barn, named after the religious statues on the premises. This room captivates with a wall of pink and blue blossoms, ivy wrapping around ceiling beams, and a welcoming skylight that bathes the area in natural light. Though many flowers are artificial, they are expertly arranged, lending a playful and whimsical ambiance that truly differentiates The Crown. Nearby, an impressive display of silverware adds a touch of refinement.

Outside, The Crown transcends the typical pub garden with its long stone pathways, fragrant lavender, an open-fire stone barbecue, and a designated herb shelf cheekily labeled ‘chef’s herbs’—a hint at the fresh ingredients that might enhance your meal.
Intrigued by the menu, I chose the roast dinner roll—a chicken and stuffing bread bun served with gravy for £9.95. While the concept adds a modern twist to a traditional dish, the execution was less successful. The bread roll was disappointingly dry, paired with cold margarine that reminded me of budget supermarket brands. Though the chicken and stuffing fillings were flavorful, their uneven ratio detracted somewhat from the overall balance.
Interestingly, the sides outshone the main dish. The hand-cut sweet potato and beetroot chips were delightfully sweet and full of flavor—arguably the highlight of the meal.
As a food critic, I always hope to find merit in the places I visit, especially when the setting is as enchanting as this. The Crown’s ambiance, from its floral accents to the tranquil gardens, is undeniably inviting. Unfortunately, the roast roll did not meet expectations, suggesting some room for improvement—particularly with bread quality.
However, my viewpoint seems to be in the minority. With a strong 4.3 out of 5 stars from nearly 900 reviewers, The Crown clearly resonates well with most patrons, who praise its warmth and charm. I would recommend visiting for the atmosphere and exploring other menu options.
Open Monday to Saturday from 11am to 11pm and Sundays from noon to 10:30pm, The Crown in Saltford offers a captivating experience—one where setting and spirit surpass the occasional culinary stumble.
