Known as “one of the most magical places in England,” Puzzlewood is a breathtaking ancient forest just a 40-minute drive from Gloucester. Recently gaining widespread attention across social media, visitors are enchanted by its fairytale charm and natural beauty.
Located between the Rivers Wye and Severn in Gloucestershire, close to the Welsh border, Puzzlewood is part of the Forest of Dean—one of England’s largest ancient woodlands. This 14-acre temperate rainforest offers towering trees, moss-covered rocks, and winding trails that feel as if they’ve leapt from the pages of a storybook.
Social media users have been mesmerized by its distinctive wooden bridges, rustic steps, and twisting paths. A popular TikTok video sharing footage from a visitor’s journey through the forest has garnered over 800,000 views, sparking even more interest in this magical location.

Many believe Puzzlewood inspired J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythical forests like Fangorn, Mirkwood, and the Old Forest, deepening its allure for fans of fantasy literature. According to Puzzlewood’s official site, the trails cover about one and a half miles, leading explorers through moss-clad gorges, up wooden stairways, and over charming footbridges to breathtaking viewpoints.
Puzzlewood is a perfect destination for families and nature lovers. Children can engage in a Roman coin treasure hunt, while interpretive boards reveal the forest’s rich heritage, geology, and its notable appearances in popular films and television, including Harry Potter, Doctor Who, and Star Wars.
However, visitors should note that due to narrow pathways and more than 200 uneven, often slippery steps, Puzzlewood is not suitable for wheelchair users, those needing mobility aids, or visitors with pushchairs. Pets are also not allowed to preserve the delicate environment.
The viral TikTok video’s comment section is filled with admiration: “This is how I imagine Beatrix Potter saw the world,” one viewer wrote. Others shared their excitement about the forest’s cinematic legacy and ethereal atmosphere, with remarks like “Puzzlewood is incredible!” and “It looks so majestic, like fairies are hiding somewhere.”
While some visitors noted the forest can get crowded, the TikTok creator mentioned visiting early in the morning when it’s much quieter, allowing for a peaceful, immersive experience in this enchanted corner of England.
