Emberwood, the newest fine dining restaurant nestled within the prestigious Grade I listed Francis Hotel in Bath’s Queens Square, marries history and modern culinary art in an unforgettable way. The restaurant’s name carries a rich dual significance that perfectly embodies its identity.
The prefix ‘Ember’ pays homage to its signature open-fire cooking. Here, dining is elevated to a performance as guests watch chefs expertly prepare dishes over glowing embers. From steaks sizzling to oysters steaming, the vibrant kitchen becomes a stage where food is transformed into theatre.
The suffix ‘wood’ honors John Wood, the visionary 18th-century architect and native of Bath’s Twerton district. Wood, son of a humble butcher, shaped much of Bath’s iconic cityscape, including The Circus, South Parade, and Queens Square itself. By naming the restaurant Emberwood, the establishment not only celebrates its cooking style but also its deep connection to Bath’s architectural heritage.

I attended Emberwood’s launch party on May 14 and was immediately captivated. The interior exudes refined elegance, combining white marble surfaces, William Morris-inspired cushions, and sparkling chandeliers that cast a warm, inviting glow.
The open kitchen was the highlight, revealing the craftsmanship behind each dish. The canapés offered a delightful preview of the menu, featuring oysters, perfectly cooked medium-rare steak, and roasted asparagus finished with a light cheese sprinkle. The asparagus was simply divine—fresh, flavorful, and utterly moreish. Though I tried oysters for the first time (a bucket list moment), they weren’t quite to my taste.
Desserts were presented on a magnificent serving cart, with intricately decorated bite-sized treats so visually stunning I hesitated before indulging. These sweets pleased not only the palate but also the eye, a fitting end to a meal at Emberwood.
Stylish and distinguished, Emberwood stands out by inviting diners to witness the artistic journey of their meal from kitchen to plate. Its inventive menu and striking ambiance pay homage to its namesake’s dedication to splendour and excellence.
Emberwood is open daily from noon until 11pm at number 5 Queens Square, within the Francis Hotel. Reservations and hotel bookings can be made online.
