Electrifying New Watersport Soars into Somerset at Wimbleball Lake

This summer, thrill-seekers in Somerset have a new way to experience the water with the introduction of eFoiling at Wimbleball Lake on Exmoor. Thanks to Somerset Council’s support, the South West Lakes Trust has brought this cutting-edge watersport to the county for the first time.

An eFoil is a sleek surfboard equipped with a hydrofoil wing beneath it and powered by an electric motor controlled via a handheld remote. This innovative design allows riders to lift off the water’s surface smoothly, creating an exhilarating and futuristic sensation of flying above the lake.

Matt Lennox, head of activities at South West Lakes Trust, expressed excitement about the sport’s potential: “Our goal is to open up outdoor activities to as many people as possible. eFoiling is incredibly accessible—perfect for beginners or anyone who found traditional wind sports challenging. Best of all, it doesn’t depend on wind conditions, making it possible to enjoy the water anytime.”

While eFoil schools exist in Cornwall, including at South West Lakes Trust’s Stithians Lake centre near Redruth, this marks Somerset’s first opportunity to experience the sport locally. It provides newcomers a welcoming pathway into the world of foiling and a fun alternative for water enthusiasts.

Starting in July, instructor-led eFoiling sessions will be offered for groups of up to three participants, with each session lasting 1.5 hours. Open to individuals aged 12 and older, sessions cost £85 per person for groups of two or more, with private lessons available at £110.
