The Taunton Town Council is making strides to reopen a vital footpath that runs along the River Tone through the town center. This footpath used to serve as a direct link from the Riverain Lodge retirement complex to key locations, including Goodland Gardens and the town center, before being closed due to the demolition of a local store and subsequent bridge repairs.
Concerns arose due to the increased walking distance for residents living on the north bank of the Tone, who no longer have easy access to the town’s green spaces and main shopping streets. To address this, the town council is working to have the footpath officially added to the Somerset Council’s rights of way map, a move that would mandate its reopening or the advertisement of an official diversion.
The council is seeking evidence from local residents to demonstrate the path’s regular use, as part of the application process. The reopening of this footpath will reestablish an uninterrupted link along the north bank of the Tone, benefitting the community and facilitating access to various areas of interest.
