A crucial early morning bus service in Taunton will be reinstated from Sunday, June 2, thanks to determined efforts by local campaigners and support from Somerset Council. The 6.22am route, running from Wellsprings and Priorswood to the town centre, provides essential transport for hospital staff and early commuters.
The decision to restore this service follows persistent appeals from Taunton MP Gideon Amos, local councillors, and the Somerset Bus Partnership, who engaged directly with First Bus management to highlight the impact of the service’s suspension.
Gideon Amos expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating: “I’m delighted the route has been reinstated after raising the issue face to face with First Bus managers, alongside the bus partnership. The collaboration with north Taunton’s Lib Dem councillors Liam Pollard, Tom Deakin, and Lee Baker was instrumental in demonstrating a united effort to support our town.”

While Amos acknowledged recent reductions in First Bus services, he commended the strides made by Somerset’s Lib Dem councillors, including saving and revitalising the Park and Ride, extending late-night services to Wellington, and introducing new pollution-free buses — all achieved despite limited funding.
Efforts are also underway to reopen Taunton Bus Station following its closure by First Bus, marking a shift from the previous administration’s plans to close the Park and Ride entirely.
David Northey, spokesperson for the Somerset Bus Partnership, thanked campaign supporters and emphasized the importance of the reinstated route: “This service will be greatly appreciated by those who rely on it. Funding is secured until next Easter, and our partnership, along with local councillors, Somerset Council, and First Bus, will work together to increase ridership on this popular line.”
The return of the bus will be marked by a send-off from Taunton’s Mayor, Cllr Martin Strauss, who will travel with representatives from the Somerset Bus Partnership to engage with passengers along the route.
Cllr Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s lead member for transport, added: “After hearing community concerns, we are pleased to fund this vital early service. Maintaining patronage is essential, and we remain committed to supporting public transport in the area.”
