RUH Bath has reached a milestone, celebrating one year since the opening of the Dyson Cancer Centre. This purpose-built, £50 million facility has revolutionized cancer care for approximately 340 patients daily from Bath, Wiltshire, and the South West region. By consolidating various cancer services under one roof, the center has streamlined treatments and improved accessibility for patients, marking a significant leap in cancer care.
Ros Helps, lead cancer nurse at RUH, expressed her enthusiasm for the positive community feedback, emphasizing the impact of the center’s high-tech equipment, compassionate care, and thoughtfully designed environment. The integration of services into one location has notably enhanced patient access and fostered closer collaboration among clinical teams, ultimately elevating the standard of care.
Featuring a 22-bed inpatient ward, alongside oncology, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy services, the center also houses essential facilities such as a pharmacy, nuclear medicine, and physics teams, in addition to accommodating the RUH’s cancer research team. The integration of cutting-edge technology, including a linear accelerator (LINAC) and a Gamma-CT scanner, made possible through charitable contributions, underscores the center’s commitment to advanced treatment modalities.

Furthermore, the Macmillan Wellbeing Hub, a non-clinical space within the center, provides a welcoming environment for patients and their families, complemented by overnight accommodation for relatives. Vivienne Taylor, a Macmillan cancer support worker, highlighted the non-clinical and supportive nature of the hub, stressing its role in expanding support services for the community.
The center’s funding, sourced from public and charitable support, underscores a collaborative effort, with notable contributions from Macmillan Cancer Support, government funding as part of the New Hospital Programme, and generous donations from the James Dyson Foundation and the Medlock Charitable Trust.
The Dyson Cancer Centre stands as a testament to the transformative impact of collaborative support, innovative design, and leading-edge technology, poised to continue its profound influence on cancer care in the years ahead.
